Warning Description: • There is an increased likelihood of severe lightning associated with thundershowers at several places in the following areas during the evening or night. • Thundershowers accompanied by heavy rainfall of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts. Frequent lightning is also likely at some places in the aforementioned areas. • Strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough sea conditions can be expected temporarily during thundershowers in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle.

Action Required: • Suspend or postpone outdoor sports, construction, agricultural and recreational activities when thunderstorms approach. • Move immediately into a substantial building or an enclosed hard-topped vehicle. • Avoid beaches, swimming areas, lakes, rivers and other water bodies. • Stay away from electrical appliances, plumbing and wired electrical systems during thunderstorms. • Remain alert and closely monitor official weather warnings. • Be prepared to evacuate vulnerable locations if necessary. • Follow flood warnings issued by the Department of Irrigation. • Follow landslide warnings issued by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO). • Contact local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance. • Avoid unnecessary fishing and maritime activities in affected sea areas. • Follow instructions issued by the Department of Fisheries and other maritime authorities.
Damage Expected: • Increased probability of thunderstorms and lightning strikes. • Risk of serious injury or death to people exposed outdoors. • Damage to electrical and electronic equipment. • Possible disruption to electricity and communication services. • Potential for associated strong winds and heavy rainfall. • Localized infrastructure damage and transport disruption. • Localized flooding of low-lying areas, roads and settlements. • Slope failures, rockfalls and soil erosion may occur in vulnerable areas. • Disruption due to blocked drainage systems, sinkholes and potholes. • High waves and rough to very rough sea conditions. • Dangerous conditions for small fishing boats and vessels operating in affected sea areas.
