An incoming front will bring widespread moderate to heavy snowfall back across the southern panhandle starting Sunday morning. As the front pushes inland, forecasters are expecting a transition period to a rain and snow mix, or potentially all rain, across Prince of Wales Island, Annette Island, and Ketchikan by Sunday afternoon with temperatures reaching into the upper 30s to low 40s along the coast. Winds will increase through the early afternoon, with strongest wind gusts up to 65 mph across southern portions of Prince of Wales Island, diminishing into early Sunday evening. Current snowfall forecast amounts of 3 to 6 inches are expected through Monday afternoon, with higher amounts possible within interior Prince of Wales Island. After the main storm system dissipates Monday evening, an active snow pattern will continue though most of next week as a large area of low pressure over the Gulf of Alaska sends persistent but intermittent bands of snow showers across the area. Snowfall accumulations will be highly variable Tuesday onward, but forecasters cannot rule out some places seeing an additional 4 to 10 inches of snowfall through Friday.
