Heavy snowfall followed by a prolonged period of rain What: - 15 to 30 cm of snow - 50 to 80 mm of rain When: This afternoon to Tuesday morning Where: Kitimat to Terrace Hazards: - Localised flooding due to rain on snow covered surfaces Additional information: An atmospheric river will begin to make landfall over the B.C. coast today and will remain over the region until Tuesday bringing heavy snow and rain. Light snow this morning will intensify this afternoon. The timing of the switch over to rain is challenging and will determine the total snowfall accumulation and total rainfall amounts as temperatures hover near the freezing mark. The current forecast calls for snow to change over to rain near midnight for Kitimat and overnight for Terrace. Snow levels will rise sharply to 1,500 metres overnight before settling near 800 metres on Monday. Locally, snowfall accumulation could reach 15 to 30 cm before the transition to rain. Once the rain begins, up to 80 mm of rain could follow the snow by Tuesday morning. This may result in localised flooding as the rain collects on snow covered surfaces before the snow completely melts. ### Local utility outages are likely. Property damage is possible. Roofs are at an increased risk of collapse under the weight of snow. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
