    Rain will increase this evening lasting into Wednesday afternoon, this combined with warm temperatures will cause an increase in melt from a primed snowpack. Flows in streams and creeks may increase quickly and reach critical levels. Mainstem rivers are expected to remain below flood stage at this point.

    * WHAT...Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt is possible.

    * WHERE...A portion of northwest Montana, including the following counties, Lincoln and Sanders.

    * WHEN...From 6 PM MDT this evening through Wednesday afternoon.

    * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

    The following message is transmitted at the request of Flathead Avalanche Center Hungry Horse MT.

    ...AVALANCHE WATCH ISSUED BY THE FLATHEAD AVALANCHE CENTER...

    16:00 MDT Mon Mar 16 2026 The Flathead Avalanche Center in Hungry Horse has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH for the following areas:

    NWS Missoula MT - MTZ001 (MTZ001)...MTZ002 (MTZ002)

    * WHAT...The avalanche danger may rise to high in the next 24 hours due to rising freezing levels and rain on snow.

    * WHERE...The Whitefish, Swan, Flathead, and Apgar Ranges, and the Lake McDonald Valley and Marias Pass regions in Glacier National Park.

    * WHEN...In effect from Mon 16:00 MDT to Tue 16:00 MDT.

    * IMPACTS...Rising freezing levels may cause widespread areas of unstable snow. The avalanche danger may rise to High (Level 4 of 5). Wet snow avalanches may occur on all aspects. Avalanches may also fail deep in the snowpack, causing very large and destructive avalanches.

    * PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Very dangerous avalanche conditions may develop. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avalanches may run long distances and can run down to valley floors or flat terrain.
