An unseasonably strong upper low will move over the islands on Friday, bringing in very unstable air for this time of year. This will be enough for a few heavy showers or thundershowers to develop in some spots. Most of these should be relatively brief, so while widespread flash flooding is unlikely, ponding of water in poor drainage areas, and maybe even some small hail, could occur in a few of the heavier downpours Friday and Friday night.

Lava fountaining from Kilauea eruption episode 47 started this afternoon at 3:27 PM HST and continues this evening. The latest radar imagery shows the highest detectable ashfall (tephra) from the lava fountaining is currently rising to around 8,000 feet above ground level this evening. Low level trade winds continue to push the ashfall particles toward the southwest direction on radar, and any additional ash from this eruption will likely fall near the Kilauea eruption source and over portions of the Kau District immediately southwest of Halemaumau Crater. Avoid excessive exposure to ash which is an eye and respiratory irritant. Those with respiratory sensitivities should take extra precaution to minimize exposure.
